Old data slowly degenerates. 1s become zeros. 0s become 1s. The speed depends on the medium. A cheap sdcard will do it quick.

I think the sd card actually entered some kind of read-only failsafe mode to prevent data loss. I'm backing it up as fast as possible now but it's slow AF.
