I want to refurbish my RasPi to learn how to setup a relay for my friends.

Even bigger challenge. Write your own relay software.

I wrote my own relay software before. Sadly haven’t worked on it in a while, but really taught me a lot about how #nostr works.

What do you mean by “write” your own relay?

Code it from scratch?

Yep. I mean maybe not 100% from scratch. Most software has some external dependencies these days. But coding it yourself instead of just using existing nostr relay software that someone else created.

More relays make clients work harder, more battery and Cpu power....Are you going to sync your relay with other big relays ? If no, having a million isolated relays is kinda gay

No this is supposed to be an isolated community. Small group of friends. Almost like a private relay.
