This is awesome

This allows you to keep your backup/storage of the key cold and only import one time, reducing how often your private key is exposed to your clipboard, operating system, etc.

It also allows far more robust backups as you just leverage your existing backup plan for Bitcoin keys (your Nostr key is derived from your seed via NIP-06).

Next step is key delegation via NIP-26, but need broad support for that in clients first!

Wild.

Geeked.

πŸ‘€

A big step towards much better key management options is almost here.

Noice!

Brilliant!

See it live in action here, the things Nostr makes possible are absolutely wild:

The dominos are falling into alignment here. Simply beautiful flow. I'm even more grateful to own a Passport.

This feature was implemented and the bounty claimed in under 3 hours. Man I love FOSS. 🧑

Passport + Nostr 🍻

This defeats the whole point of NIP57 or other key segregation methods.

Sharing the key with the client is no different than exposing the keys in a different manner πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

If you are going to use a HW, have it sign a parent key for delegation.

When NIP-26 delegation is possible in more clients we'll have support ready for that.

Key delegation is obviously the end-goal here πŸ™‚

For that you need to implement frost.

Loving this. πŸ”₯

Very cool. How many other nostr clients support importing an nsec via QR code? Is Amethyst the only one so far?

Only Amethyst as far as we are aware!

Perhaps #[3] could add something like this to Damus?

Sure, wouldn’t be too difficult

Absolutely awesome, but until key delegation, we are all starting over? Feels like I wanna wait till that's sorted before using passport for sign in (unless you update founders addition so I can use that instead of Batch 2 ;)

This is amazing, good job guys. Looking forward to using it

Very nice. Just to be Debbie Downer though I agree somewhat with #[2]'s original comment about this maybe not being the most secure thing ever.

It's much better than copy pasting our private keys around and exposing them to common clipboard attacks, data siphoning of keyboards like Google Keyboard, etc.

But NIP-26 key delegation is absolutely the end-goal here and is already a WIP for us.

Agreed. I guess I just choose to not paste my nsec anywhere as the compromise. πŸ™‚

Nice

For those that do not own a passport device. Where can we learn more?

To learn more about Passport generally you can see this page:

We don't have any public documentation yet on this specific feature as it's yet to be released, but will definitely have docs around it once it's available!
