There’s no need to audit if you’re a divine authority. That might sound silly in the modern era, but that was the sensibility of the church 500 years ago. There was nothing such as objective truth, just the ‘will of God’ as executed by the Pope and his Cardinals. Despite the various reformations, it seems like that attitude is still in the heart of the Curia.

That was possible as long as the internal problems weren't visible. In one way or another, the congregation's faith sustained them. The financial crisis is a reflection of the crisis within the church's organization itself.
