Been attempting to wrap my head around this. So “Nostr” is like the base layer & people can build their own “layer two’s” Damus being one of these? Is that correct? I plan on going down this rabbit hole but your post caught my attention

no not really. Nostr is just a set of documents that defines certain standards/rules which makes up the nostr protocol. These documents are called NIPs and can be found here: https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips. NIP-01 defines the basic protocol and the other NIPs are basically extensions to the protocol.
Clients such as Damus and Astral will build their clients to adhere to one or more of these standards(NIPs). They’re not “layer two’s” or anything, it’s just software built based on a certain standard. Kind of like how Bitcoin wallets are built based on BIPs(Bitcoin Improvement Proposals, https://github.com/bitcoin/bips).
