Would you tell a battered spouse to be humble and place her abuse husband above herself?
Or would you tell her to have some self-esteem and move out?

Of course she should separate herself from her abuser, that's simple self-defense. But her husband should be loving his wife like he loves himself so that she has no need to defend herself against him.
Perhaps part of the reason he abuses her is that he does not love himself.
