I think nip-05 is the way. I just need to add support for it in damus...

I was hesitant before because it's kind of exclusionary, but I'm hoping to have a way to reserve a damus.io NIP-05 soon.

Is it possible for clients to do the same thing as git and support (searching) partial hashes? The possibility of collisions is still very low.

Then I could share a 12 char pubkey, problem solved (for everyone).

yes the protocol supports prefix queries on pubkeys

although damus doesn't detect this as a pubkey and will not try to use it in a query. it probably should.
