Ok nostr, the time is come for me to setup a non-custodial wallet.
My only requirement is I don’t want to have to fuck around with it all the time, and don’t want to lose my funds just because I’m not babysitting it everyday.
Contenders:
Zeus - The node is in the phone
Mutiny Wallet - The cool kids choice
Phoenix - The boomer of non- custodial Lightning wallets
I’ve changed wallets so many times. Phoenix is great if you can handle the fees. I was using Phoenix but now I’ve switched to Zeus and I love it.
Yeah I was planning a beefy initial channel, going to avoid new channel fees.
Do I need to manage channels etc with the Zeus one?
Do I have to worry about channel closures etc?
I'm at a point now where I just keep enough sats on Alby to tip on here. I was running my own node and had beefy channels. But couldn't spend it anywhere since no one takes Lightning here.

Yeah I totally hear ya on that. I tried the Lightning node thing with Umbrel for a while but I spent way too much on channel balancing etc, and I’m like … wtf am I doing. Burning sats 😅

Yeah I feel ya. I use my sats to buy gift cards for stores I shop at like Amazon through The Bitcoin Company app. You get sats back to your account for every gift card you buy. So it’s a win win for me since I’m spending money at these store anyway. I like The Bitcoin Company app compared to other apps I’ve used because it’s all lightning and you get the sats back immediately ready to withdraw to your preferred Lightning wallet.
Do you need it to support receiving zaps?
It would be a bonus, but I’m actually fine with just having Alby or something for a smaller zap fund
Ok that makes it easier lol. Zeus is the only self-custodial option right now that can receive zaps, short of running your own full always-on Lightning node. Phoenix or Breez (another popular node in phone) are tried and true self custodial lightning wallet apps with reasonable fees. Breez is my personal favorite. Been using it for a couple years with very few issues.
I haven’t used Mutiny because of the channel open fees and all the troubles I’ve seen people post about force closes. I’ve only used Zeus (node in phone option) a little bit, and while I think it’s good, I just haven’t used it enough to know how much I trust it not to give me issues.
When I say “reasonable fees” I mean for self custodial wallets. With any of these you should expect to pay more in fees than with custodial options, especially when you need more liquidity and they have to open new channels.
Yeah that makes sense…. I like the sound of “tried and true”, maybe I’ll check out Breez.
Although I don’t mind tinkering, I don’t feel like doing it will my main Lightning wallet, ya know?
If you have a stack you worry about consider multisig. Have any of those "accumulation " wallets but sweep to a more secure and forgiving solution.
Unchained makes it easy. I read you can do multi sig on your own, but that is not me.
