Just tossing out some ideas as a first reaction to some of the stuff I learned from the Presidio Bitcoin Quantum Summit. Sounds like we might potentially need a lot of changes? All TBD, of course, as more research and consensus is needed, but interesting to start feeling this out nonetheless. Where are you on this topic?

Would love to see some way to learn more about what quantum secure entails - for the nerds

If you want to go hardcore, you can watch 6.5 hours live stream recordings of the Presidio Bitcoin Quantum Summit: https://www.youtube.com/@PresidioBitcoin/streams

For a TLDR, I copied the transcripts and asked AI to summarize and then create a list of to-dos for the Bitcoin Design Community. I shared those in the bitcoin-design-guide channel in Discord.

I have a bit of a placeholder issue for this topic for the guide that I'll try to add to over time. https://github.com/BitcoinDesign/Guide/issues/1133

forgive me if the questions are dumb but what are the implications for current hardware wallets? will they be able to handle these huge addresses and signatures with only software upgrades? how many of these quantum resistant transactions would fit in a block?

What app is that ? I never seen like that

No dumb questions at all. I've also been hearing a lot of this for the first time this week. You are very right with your concerns. Hardware wallets will likely need processor, RAM and battery upgrades and become more expensive. And much fewer transactions will fit per block, impacting scaling. Really seems like a very fundamental challenge to a lot of things that we may think were settled. But exactly how it will play out, no one can tell at the moment, AFAICT.

thanks for your answer, those were my initial thoughts as well. if we want Bitcoin to last for hundreds or even thousands of years we need to be prepared, i'm glad that knowledgeable and smart people are thinking hard about this and proposing solutions already. bullish on bitcoiners.
