For roughly a million years, all technology was the hand axe. Basically a sharpened stone. Hominids would use it to clean meat from bones and such.

It took a million years for someone to put the sharpened stone on the end of a stick to make a spear. Spear-wielding humans dominated all non-spear-users as well as all megafauna worldwide.

All thanks to the stick.
