One of the things that cracked me up the most when reading about it is the justification that people (?) should feel more "represented" and "included" by the figures because they often have unnatural skin colors like blue or fucsia.

Well this is because of white liberal corporatists being EXTREMELY skittish about race, even as they so self assure in their own “anti-racism” and that they are oh so actively dismantling racial oppression…
That said, this is thing that goes further back than today’s woke lords, having a blue or green or fuchsia character has long been a way to signal blackness without ever having to give treatment to black issues in the context of the show. Prime example of this is Skeeter in "Doug” (And Piccolo in DBZ, but being a Japanese show, it’s approaching from a completely different cultural context)
