I think that the SMS thing is also about pinpointing your location. I have the same issue with some bank accounts held in Vientam. We have managed to sovle it now with banking apps, but it was a problem for a while. Also, with credit cards, we changed our setting in the app to approve payments via the app, not via SMS. Some offer it, some don't. Also, some offer email codes.
