Anyone know a software for online communities that will allow privacy, own server perhaps, threading of messages, diff groups to be created for aspects of the community. A little like Reddit I suppose. Doesnt have to be Nostr based but could be as well. Thanks!

does it have to be decentralized?

I use discord for exactly what you described

True. I'll run is past them. How secure is it? Any bad history? Are sign ups KYC etc?

I've used it since 2016, no problem at all. You can create your own server on their platform, invite other users, manage roles for your members, set up permissions to certain channels/threads... even nsfw content is allowed

it's perfect for building a "closed" community, I even use it as a substitute for Slack for company communications

obviously there's always a risk of getting hacked if you install dubious plugins, so just follow same practices to be safe on the internet

sign up is with email only, they do offer extra security steps with 2FA authentication or phone number (but no address, real name or id)

--they do can shut your server down if you don't follow the T&C and enough people report your server (as in any centralized platform) but I have rarely seen that tbh
