I started 2023 with no home server and ended it with a monolithic server with 66 running containers.

It's an old gaming PC so it's plenty capable. But holy god if I was to lose all of this at once, it would be heartbreaking to say the least.

2024 needs to be ALL ABOUT BACKUP AND REDUNDANCY. The mission is to harden my system before I have a catastrophic outage.

NAS needs to be on the list. Then I think I will begin to spin out some hosted apps on one or two mini PCs to section off the more critical services.

Until then - living on the edge. 🤣

Oh man you do not want to see what my "server room" looks like right now. That's another project - but it may be worth a before/after shot :D

I cannot recommend borgmatic highly enough for this. Automatic backups, compressed, encrypted, deduplicated, the ability to go back in time to get the copy of that config file from last Tuesday... it has it all.

Just set up one container/VM with a good amount of disk space and send all your bsckups there.

Next level is setting up your servers with Ansible, which rolls out config files, decrypts secrets and stuffs them into your configs, and gets you a nice fresh install as quickly as possible. It's easy to test, and is an excellent tool for testing changes and keeping track of change management.
