But Orbot is a VPN, right? Is it needed if I was already using a different VPN?

Ok, apparently it's actually a proxy, but it does have a VPN mode

"VPN mode" is just a fancy name for taking up a VPN system slot on android which allows it to route traffic of other appa through its Tor proxy, even if the apps don't natively support Tor proxies.

You don't need VPN mode to use it with amethyst.
