Around 17% of GDP is government spending. Reducing government spending reduces GDP. Many people see this as a sign of economic weakness, but, to the extent that the government isn't doing anything productive anyway, it is actually strength. The money the government would have wasted can be invested productively to improve GDP in the future. This is why GDP is a bullshit measurement that gives a distorted view of economic reality.
