There is now a potential reason for self-zapping (fapping). If someone has the top zap and you donโ€™t want it to show up as such, you can fap+1 to get rid of it.

Iโ€™m ambivalent about it but it should be an interesting experiment, if nothing else.

This is an interesting idea, that's actually philosophically deeper the more you contemplate it ๐Ÿค”

At this scale of nostr itโ€™s probably irrelevant but can definitely see how it could be gamed in future.

Thatโ€™s the beauty of this kind of plug and play implementation though - users get to choose modularly how they want to consume apps.

Nostr is already a country mile ahead of big tech social platforms.

Love getting to be here and see it all!

If someone pays me 1M sats to show something I donโ€™t want, I have the choice to keep the money or pay 1M + 1 sat to bump it. The problem is, if I buy back the top spot, their zap still shows in the zap list so they have gained some free advertising there.

Weโ€™ll probably need more rules around that sort of thing and I can imagine ways it could get out of control quickly, but it will be entertaining and edifying to watch it play out.

I was critical of anon-zaps for the very reason that they would be easily gameable but I believe youโ€™re speaking about Willโ€™s implementation in Damus right?

If so this is a different thing, heโ€™s making the algos pluggable so if you donโ€™t like his sorting you can add a different version in to Damus to control your experience.

Regardless, we get to see game theory play out here in a way that is completely unique with hard and scarce money on the line and a protocol which enables movement between apps. Super cool!

There's a simple solution on Damus' side. He can only sort zaps that shared with the devs.

All wallets can do that and maybe signal which zaps have a rev share.

What motivation I would have to do this?

In Damus now (probably Test Flight only) the top zap gets pinned to the top of the the replies of a note.

I can pay the person who posted a note to have my zap show on their note as the pinned reply. The owner of the note can use the sats they got paid for that zap + 1 more sat to outbid that pinned zap.

Ultimately, there may end up being too many edge cases and weird unintended consequences that this might not last long. But it could be interesting to see how it plays out.
