The western Christian nations did a lot of terrible things as they expanded, but everywhere that Christianity went, it ended slavery and ended cannibalism. Those are the “backwards” aspects of the world being referred to here.
I’ve heard he said the same about slavery being the best thing that ever happened to slaves. /sarcasm
