Not really. I would possibly use if i was birding in a totally new area where i didnt already know most of the species. Ive been seriously birding for about 25 years, not to say i dont sometimes get stumped

You definitely have a keen passion. Keep up the good work. Spring is nearly in full swing and with it, millions of birds are coming!
