"Proof-of-work protocols developed by computer engineers like Adam Back may represent the discovery of an externally stored programming technique that simultaneously changes the physical state of the environment outside of our computers as well as the physical state of the environment inside our computers, giving computer programmers a way to program our virtual environment and physical environment simultaneously and then link them together. With this capability, the abstractions we use in cyberspace start to reshape our surrounding physical environment and then import the real-world physical properties of our surrounding environment (properties like physical cost, physical scarcity, and physical decentralization) into cyberspace. It sounds extraordinary, but all that it takes to achieve this is for people to simply build the infrastructure needed to convert watts into bits, which is precisely what the Bitcoin network is doing."
