Ribes sp. can host a rust fungus that attacks white pine. The forestry industry is very protective of the pine and got laws passed.
Nowadays, there are cultivars that are safe to grow around pine, but the laws still exist in many states. Despite this, there are sometimes wildized populations (and a native blackcurrant species) growing where they are legally prohibited π
Of places I have considered living permanently as an adult, Ribes are still illegal to grow in North Carolina, New Hampshire, and West Virginia, but legal in Tennessee.
One man I would like to emulate got the laws overturned in New York and now has a blackcurrant farm:

π Oh! That explains it.
Searching further, it seems that vast majority of the states have cancelled the ban by now.
Great opportunity for nostr to corner the market here π€
