1. Deepfake Crypto Scam – 1.48M Loss

In February 2025, hackers took control of Tanzanian billionaire Mohammed Dewji’s X (formerly Twitter) account. They used deepfake videos to promote a fake cryptocurrency called Tanzania Token deceiving over 2.2 million followers. Despite Dewji's quick denial and regained account control, investors lost approximately $1.48 million before the scam was exposed.

2. Pig Butchering Scams

These scams involve fraudsters building fake online relationships, often through dating apps or social media, to gain victims' trust. They then lure victims into investing in fake cryptocurrency opportunities, leading to significant financial losses. While not exclusive to Tanzania, this scam has been reported in the region.

3. Rising Crypto Fraud Cases

Tanzania has seen a 250% increase in crypto fraud* in the first half of 2023. A significant portion of these cases involved manipulated documents and fake identities, making it harder for investors to verify legitimate opportunities.
