This is not a scam at all. These guys are building something amazing. Listen to their podcast to get the scoop. It’s not even in Alpha yet. It’s been fun following their very transparent journey to make a new client. Ian is building it for his wife so she’ll get off the legacy social media apps that steal your attention and sell it to advertisers. They are the Chaos Cartel.

So it sounds like you don't know what chaos stands for either? I really wish them the best in their efforts. I think fountain required an app, and I listen on desktop, so not ideal for me. I also much prefer video content, which I don't recall fountain supporting on desktop last I checked.

But yeah, really interesting how Ian (likely) has built up a legend around several often-repeated catchphrases. I like the idea of the concept, using a basic web of trust model for an algo. The whole advert marketplace? Good luck with that, I suppose we'd have to see how it plays out in the wild.

Also, what is to stop me from just using another nostr client that doesn't ask me to watch ads? I guess it depends how much of this is really running on nostr.

That’s the point. If you want to watch the ads, you’ll earn sats. If you don’t, you’ll don’t have to. It will be up to you.

Flirting With Bitcoin is a podcast that can accessed via any podcast platform. Fountain App gives you free sats for listening to podcast.

Corporations Harvesting Attention On

Social Media, the C.H.A.O.S. Cartel.

Hey!

Check our our manifesto, it defines it as Corporations Harvesting Attention on Social Media. It's a video featured on our website but maybe your scrolled past it?

https://vimeo.com/1022486742

Love all your questions and really appreciate your critical interest. Give me a second to read them through and respond.

Yeah, to be fair, didn't watch videos. Was looking at this during a quiet time where videos would be disruptive.

All good. It's helpful to learn what confuses people coming to our website. The written version of our manifesto can be downloaded if you scroll to the bottom of our homepage.

But I worked pretty hard on the video version so do watch if you have the time. 🤗

Ok, i did start to look at that but didn't want to deal with downloading a file to my phone and using a pdf viewer. Yes, I am a lazybones that wants to be led directly to water witg the least friction possible!

Look you're not wrong here. Your attention is extremely valuable! Exactly our point 😅

Not trying to give you homwork but 😅

You can listen to Flirting with Bitcoin anywhere you listen to podcasts. Episode 103 announced our company NextBlock after we presented it at Nostrdam, a Nostr event the day before the Amsterdam Bitcoin conference back in October. We're still in early days! Aiming to be extremely transparent about how we build this via the podcast.

Much of the discussion on our pod is of our idea for the Attention Marketplace and how we will design social experience. This is all while we build out our first product that will test the business model of the Attention Marketplace.

This is a big idea and not one I can easily explain in a couple of notes without sparking more questions.

But this is opt-IN.

No one will be forced to used it. Of course you can experience Nostr on other apps. Ours will require strike integration for the reasons we discuss in this episode. And the revenue we generate from the ad sales will fund the development and maintenance of the application. People who want to make money watching ads can then use that Bitcoin to zap content creators. Creating a circular economy on Nostr.

Note, we are not a Nostr client. We are a social media company that'susing Nostr and Bitcoin. The closest comparison would be what the fountain app or wavlake is doing.

i am personally excited about the attention marketplace. been following the idea build on this for the past year

Thanks Dan! We have something very exciting to announce soon that will make this all feel less theoretical. Appreciate your vote of confidence!

I appreciate this, and I understand the comparison to wavlake and fountain. I am listening to ep 105 today, seemed to be a good starting point, but I may rewind a little. I wish you and Ian the best with implementing your big ideas. That takes courage, and clearly you have plenty.

There have been lots of "watch stupid ads, win stupid prizes" attempts over the years. I had a stuffed monkey from "punch the monkey" for a lot of years. Lately these have been really scammy, advertizing gift cards for redemption or even bitcoin payouts that just never quite happen. Clearly these companies are siphoning off ad revenue and passing on little, if any, rewards to users. I think your attention marketplace, if transparent enough, could overcome some of that bad juju.

I still have many reservations over whether there is a market for what you are proposing, on either the ad side or the user side. I suppose we will find out!

The main point that we try to press is that we personally can't trust something if we don't understand the business model that funds it. Whenever I heard about a product/company my question always is "how do they make money?" And often there answer we get is "they will eventually figure that out".

Instead we want to make clear where the money will come from. We're not accepting any investor or grant funding. We are self-funding until we launch and then we will sell ads and make money a honest and transparent way.

And we take a percentage of the ad buy, but the rest of the advertising budget goes directly to who watches (based on the price the advertiser sets). We will put out something in the next few weeks that details this further. I don't want to upset my husband and get ahead of myself here in this conversation. 😅 But we already have people excited to advertise in this revolutionary way. We are trying to be heads down and focused while we build.

And you have the right skeptism. This is how critical we must be. Ultimately, we want to make the attention marketplace open source. We gotta make sure we design something that doesn't exploit people or advertisers. It should be mutually beneficial. That's why we're being so public about how and why we're building it. It will eventually be a public good!

We didn't want to create a social media company. We first shared the attention marketplace idea with anyone we could in the Nostr community. But we quickly learned we have to prove it out before anyone else will add it to their apps. And fair enough! So here we are. 🤗
