Why did Nostr inherited hashtags? They were just an optimization for discovery from the old days of technology and compute limitations.

Because tech is still limited on Nostr side. Relays only store events. They do not process events according to a specific algorithm.
And hashtags are still the most decentralized way to tag events. Only the content creator decides whether the event is tagged for a specific topic.
