California’s struggles are largely self-inflicted, yet it never hesitates to extend its hand for federal support. It prides itself on being an economic powerhouse, a global leader in innovation, and a cultural titan—until the bill comes due. Then, the same state that boasts of its wealth and independence suddenly needs a lifeline. It’s a paradox of arrogance and dependence, a place that claims to lead the nation while quietly relying on it to stay afloat.

But most states do this. Not many states run a budget surplus

Not where I’m from. Not even close to the insanity California puts itself through.
