### What are Regular Expressions?

Regular expressions are a powerful way to search text and documents. Everyone should know how to use regular expressions.

Regular Expressions (aka regex) are used to find and replace words, numbers, and characters in programs such as LibreOffice (Find and Replace), the Thunar File Manager (Rename), and the Linux command line "grep" command, which stands for goto regular expression and print.

### Tutorial on Regular Expressions

Here's a good video by Luke Smith on Odysee explaining regular expressions.

Sidenote: He is using the i3 desktop environment if you're curious what it looks like. i3 tiles windows, and is great for text based programs, such as terminals and command line text editors.

### RegExr.com

https://regexr.com/

"RegExr" is a favorite website for playing around with Regular Expressions. Paste in some text that you would like to search, and then experiment with different regex expressions at the top.

At this website you can create your regular expression and see what works. This site also has helpful info on the left to help you figure out how it all works.

Regular Expressions differ between languages slightly. The "RegExr" website is for Javascript and PCRE. It will not work for the grep command.
