I once heard a part of a conversation between Edward Snowden and Neil Degrasse Tyson. They speculated that maybe the reason that SETI never hears broadcasts from other intelligences is that they’re only a narrow window of time when a civilization broadcasts in the clear before they discover cryptography.

Maybe we’ve been hearing aliens the whole time, but we don’t have the decryption keys.
