To comment on this, personally don't think it's a good look if a cops family is getting that much money after killing someone. I fear that other police officers will see that and try to do the same. I hope I'm wrong.

I understand the concern. Personally I think a copycat is less likely, but regardless, the fact that the shooter is getting a windfall is bad optics could inflame the situation.
