When my husband and I were newly weds, we had 2 large dogs. We had several people comment that we were ready for kids because we had mastered dogs. My husband replied, "They aren't the same. You can't throw your kids in the backyard for the day when you have other plans."

Of course, we later had 2 kids and my husband and oldest are driving together across the country in 2 days to take him to college.
