Take a look in this lovely guy:

Something ~1990, the biggest problem for Brazil was something very fun, called hyperinflation.
Hyperinflation happens when your "money" is SO SHIT that your inflation grows at a ridiculously rate.
As an example, the accumulated inflation between 1986 untill 1989 in Brazil was 107.492,07%. In other words, the price of an item can go up 20x yearly.
Going back to the point: The guy from the photo is Fernando Collor de Mello, and he had a plan to deal the the hyperinflation!
After three months as president, he announced the plan "Brasil Novo" (Plan New Brazil).
Some of the actions of that plan were:
- Creation of a new currency: Cruzeiro Novo (Cr$)
- Price and salary freezes
- Prices increases in energy, postal services, etc
- Creation of new taxes
Ah, yes. Also one more little thing: HE DECIDED TO BLOCK ALL THE ASSETS ABOVE 50.000 NCz$ OF ALL THE POPULATION.
As a reference, 50.000 NCz$ was not enough to buy a car.
He was impeached some time later. But that disastrous left its mark.

Currently, Fernando Collor de Mello is in the Senate.

I'm not a specialist in the matter. But seem's like a good story to share with you all!
