What is it exactly?

"Fediverse" is really ActivityPub, a protocol for different social media networks to talk to each other. The implementation most people are familiar with is Mastodon.

Yeah, you have an account on one server and that server federates with others so it's decentralized that way. But the problems are:

1. Your home server can shut down and you lose everything

2. No encryption native to the protocol

3. The servers like to ban each other, so it's fragmented that way. Mostly leftist servers ban every server with views right of Bernie
