Offering steady weekly “interest” returns of 7% to creditors, Trendon T. Shavers (known as Pirateat40 on BitcoinTalk) runs a covert operation for roughly eight months, accepting only substantial bitcoin deposits (50+ BTC) and distributing weekly “interest” payments. On August 17, 2012, Pirateat40 abruptly stops the operation and disappears with deposits estimated between 86,202 and 500,000 BTC. On July 23, 2013, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission charges Shavers with defrauding investors through a Ponzi scheme.
