BANDWIDTH LIMITS

When a lot of people talk about the future of Bitcoin they talk about how storage is getting cheaper. They forget that bandwidth isn’t necessarily free.

One thing I’d like to report is I’ve annoyingly hit my ISP 1200GB data cap for 3 months in a row. I haven’t synced a Bitcoin node in any of those months!

Sure we watch a decent bit of television on the 4K TV. Yeah I’ve downloaded a couple AI models.

My ISP charges $10/50gb after the cap. If my standard usage hits the cap, and I ALSO have to download the blockchain it would cost me (650gb/50gb) = 13 * $10 = $130!

The blockchain costs $130 in bandwidth LOL

your internet sucks

there is bandwidth based and connection based services, the best are connection

you pay for all of the line, all of the time, there is never any overcharge

i only tolerate metered connections on mobile if at all, and the good ones still give you 256kbit after the quota is used, enough for a low res video call

i probably typically use about 1tb a month, never pay more than about $40 for that

It’s xfinity so it’s like one of the most popular providers in the U.S. which is setup in this way.

If I used the xfinity modem I think I’d get unlimited but I like having my own modem. But it’s starting to not be worth it. I could just get the xfinity modem and turn off the wifi and keep using my DDWrt router.

To be clear, xfinity is only metered after 1200GB

well it kinda sounds like that's the way to go... i'd be running a wireguard VPN through their router though, kinda sus they make it so much better to use their modem no?

It is sus. One of their many incentives for us to use their hardware is it generates a secondary public WiFi network that subscribers can use when out and about.

oh, well... that is a legit reason, that's value add for them

very often those things you can pay for a day or two while you pass by

they have them everywhere, here in madeira MEO does this thing

it may sometimes mean some fucker down the street in an airbnb is leeching 4k porn but most of the time it should be awesome...

use the VPN anyhow, that's just a rule now
