I wonder now if people do this with other dioecious plants?

The only other ones I can think of where people would want all females are some less economically relevant trees, though, so I don’t know if anyone would try this instead of grafting.

Good question I have never heard of it for other plants. It sort of has it's niche here and to be honest I am struggling to think of another dioecious plant that is an annual, as this is where this practice would be most useful.
