The King & the Horse Manure
HOW THE KÖ GOT ITS NAME.
Kastanienallee was the name of the Kö until the mid-19th century. Then the King, Frederick William IV of Prussia, came to the otherwise tranquil Düsseldorf. But it was 1848, a time of revolutionary turmoil, and the people were furious over what they perceived as unjust Prussian decrees. And so, an angry crowd greeted the monarch on Kastanienallee on his way from the train station to Jägerhof Palace.
The people hooted and sang insulting songs – and threw horse manure at the king. One of them supposedly even hit him in the coat. His Majesty was outraged, left the city, and Düsseldorf subsequently fell into disrepute as the "main center of anarchy and disorder in the Rhine Province." In order to win back the king's mercy after the horse manure attack, the city fathers decided in 1851 to rename the scandalous street Königsallee in honor of His Majesty.
The boulevard owes its now world-famous name to King Frederick William IV of Prussia, the revolution – and a horse apple.
