During the 1947-48 war that led to the creation of the State of Israel, a number of massacres, as well as the rape and murder of Palestinian women, were committed by Jewish troops. In addition, between 450 and 500 Palestinian villages were simply wiped out. We know that because of the work of a group of so-called "new historians" — Israelis who challenge traditional views of history. The best known of these is Benny Morris, whose study of the 1948 war is based on extensive archival research of predominantly Jewish sources. As a result of these massacres and rapes, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled their homes, often in fear of what might happen to them.
