I have a weird relationship with government. I hate it, but I accept that it exists. I just want it to go back to its basic role: protecting our negative rights. To me, that’s its only legitimate purpose. Anything beyond that starts to feel like a power-hungry leviathan trying to grow even bigger.

Government is the greatest violator of my negative rights though.

I think government and individual rights are incompatible concepts. People only fail to see it because they have installed a lot of semantic stop signs along that path of questioning.

I definitely agree that government is the greatest violator of our negative rights. But isn't it because their mandate now goes beyond negative rights into "positive" rights?

It is because at its core government as we know it is without consent of the governed.

Definitely agree on that

What's really going to bake your noodle later on is realizing it must paradoxically violate its 'basic role' in order to fulfill it

Isn't that only the case with taxation?
