TIL that potato onions exist

I only heard about them a few years back and they aren't easy to find. They divide at the 'bulb' level which makes them easy to grow didn't realise they did this though as they were shaded out in previous years.

They have a walking onion here they does something similar.

Yeah I wonder if they are related in some way

Yip, well you'd plant that for the next harvest

I have walking onions. The flower turns into a cluster of small onions that grow until they topple the plant. I usually just step them into the ground and they start growing there. They come back every year through Minnesota winters.

Having thought these were a funny name for walking onions I went and looked it up.

Turns out potato onions are different from walking onions in that one sets bulb clusters at the ground level and the other sets bulbils aerially.

Til

Yeah that's what I thought but this one is doing both 😁

Well to be fair, onions are all so closely related they should probably all be living in Appalachia.

Better angle, you can see it divide at the ground level too 🙃

Dont think i had ever seen a potato onion.

TIL. We grow potatoes onions, too. love them!
