Yes you can. Cashu Mints are built on Lightning.

And you might not want to use a custodian. A fully non-custodial setup is the best, but not everyone wants to setup their own node and manage their channels. Cashu offers an alternative that reduces the drawbacks and offers many benefits over „regular“ custodial Lightning.

So it’s just a better version of custodial LN wallets? I have a lot on my plate, at the moment, but once I get settled into my boat, I’ll have a lot do free time. I’ll look into this more. I’m especially curious about fedimints as I believe it to be a great solution to self custody while actually living on a boat. The “boating accident” is funny until it becomes an actual possibility. Boats can and do sink, all the time.

Is there any documentation or tutorial available on how to operate a fedimint?

Is it any good to run a "solo" mint, where I'm the only user (just for experiments)?

Or should I "join" a publicly available mint for this purpose?

I don’t know the answers but I’d be very interested to hear what you find out. I’m in the middle of a different project at the moment but, in a week or two, I’m going to do a deep dive and figure out fedi. Have you reached out to obi, directly? Fedi is still niche enough he’ll probably respond fairly quickly.
