It is like a martial artist. In the beginning, there is much effort in learning and practicing the basics. Once one becomes proficient they can start discarding what doesn't work for them and adding more of what does.
When one reaches excellence or even mastery, then they can trust their training and instincts—hone their skills—sharpen the saw, focus on innovation, and adapt themselves to the opponent.
Like Bruce Lee once famously said, "When the opponent expands, I contract; and when he contracts, I expand. And when there is an opportunity, 'I' do not hit, 'it' hits all by itself."
