Betty “Banzai Betty” Depolito is a pioneering surfer, media professional, and advocate for gender equality in surfing. Born on September 11, 1958, she began her surfing career in California before establishing herself on Oahu’s North Shore in Hawaii. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, she was part of the “California Golden Girls,” an elite group of female surfers who challenged the male-dominated industry. Betty was a top-rated international surfer and the California West Coast Champion, competing at iconic breaks like Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach.
Beyond her surfing achievements, Betty has made significant contributions as a media professional and event producer. She produced the first women’s surfing DVD in the 1980s and later worked as a reporter and technician for major networks, including ESPN. Her passion for promoting women’s sports led her to create “FlHi Girls Surfing & Sports TV,” a platform showcasing female athletes. In 2010, she founded the Women’s Waimea Bay Championship, marking the first all-women big-wave surf competition at Waimea Bay.
Betty continues to be active in the surfing community, sharing her experiences and promoting the sport through various media channels. She maintains an Instagram account under the handle @banzaibetty, where she shares insights into her life and work. Additionally, she runs a YouTube channel, “Banzai Betty Depolito,” featuring a variety of sports content, with a focus on women’s surfing and bodyboarding.
In recognition of her contributions to surfing and her dedication to advancing opportunities for women in the sport, the Hawaii House of Representatives honored Betty in 2020. Today, she continues to be a mentor, an inspiration, and a champion for female surfers everywhere.
