I recall a government school English class years ago in which this poem was assigned for recitation and discussion. Recall the lines

“Theirs not to make reply,

“Theirs not to reason why,

“Theirs nut to do and die.”

My comment when called upon to speak was that the poem was crap (being too young to realize that ‘bullshit’ is a much better word) and that it would have been better if someone had shot the guy who have the order to charge.

I was told I had a very bad attitude and if it continued I would be suspended. I was too young to seize the opportunity, but at least I was thinking clearly.
