Not to rain on your parade, but to me, it seems like some (typical Italian) high level jiujutsu from the ragazzi at the Stock Exchange happened here. Think about where the finger is facing toward.

Whatever smart critiques the author and the ones who thought got one up on them, seem to have been turned upside down.

Statue of a raised hand salute with all its fingers broken, except the middle one, and a politician trying to virtue signal by putting it in front of the Stock Exchange in the aftermath of the 2008 banking crisis. Author happy, Stock Exchange chaps really unhappy. Statue gets installed there anyway.

Except, it's facing outwards FROM the building it's supposed to be "critiquing". Looks like point, set, match for the finanzieri.
