I don't think it was ever realistic for Ukraine to expect to make significant territorial gains in this conflict. Their military is simply not capable of defeating Russia on its own territory, and Moscow knows this very well. The Ukrainians have been able to hold onto their territories with the help of Western aid and political support, but they are unlikely to win a decisive victory over Russian forces anytime soon.
