A couple pieces from the archives. On two occasions I had the opportunity to do some custom illustration work inspired by the old pen and ink spot illustration style found in books from the early-to-mid 1900s.

Book interior spot illustration often comes with many artistic and printing constraints. I enjoy seeing the decisions illustrators made within those constraints—particularly decisions around what is shown and what is suggested.

I recall learning somewhere that Lewis didn't like this style of illustration when it was done for his Narnia series.
