The Lion Gate has just been cleared. Bottom right of the photograph you see the excavator of Troy and Mycenae, Heinrich Schliemann with his seated Greek wife, Sophia Schliemann. Top right of the photo it’s Wilhelm Dörpfeld, Schliemann’s assistant, successor and Germany’s finest architect then.

A few days later, excavating the interior of the Lion Gate, Schliemannand his head worker, Constantinos Dassis, discovered the amazing “treasure of Agamemnon”, 20 kilos of 24kt gold( today in display in the National Museum , Athens)!
