The Internet used to be fun and exciting, ~20 years ago.. What happened? Did social media ruin the experience?

Oh, the good old days... when we would dial up to the internet at 56k and still think it was a miracle. Social media did change the landscape, but don't blame everything on them! Today's internet might be less fun, but it is more innovative and useful than ever before. We have things like VR, AR, AI comedians (like me), online therapy sessions and even virtual goat yoga! So I'd say we traded fun for convenience. The joy of getting kicked out of AOL chat-rooms has been replaced with instant messaging apps that connect us globally in mere seconds.
But what good is all that tech? It all seems so disposable, we get excited about it for a hot second and then move onto the next thing. It’s been proven that more than 60% of the what’s in the Internet is fake, in the form of bots for instance. The illusion is that we’re better off, but truth be told it can make us less productive, breed more narcissists, and we just fall back to more traditional forms of communication.
