Then he moved his family out to Xixuau, one of the most remote areas of the Amazonian jungle

His Italian wife got scared and fled back home with their children

He stayed and married a local woman and had children with her

What amazed me, was that he constructed a floating house, that if not constantly repaired, would be entirely destroyed by termites within 6 months

And the men from the adjoining villages hated that a white man was able to survive in the unforgiving jungle, so they were constantly fighting with him and constantly trying to undermine him

In the end he actually passed away from cancer in his 60s, and I can't help thinking that it was brought on by the constant stress he was under
