There are probably a few situations where I’d want to, but for most people it’s way more hassle, and even more risky from a financial standpoint, than it’s ever going to be worth.

That's been my experience. I've lost more sats running my own lightning mode than I probably will ever make.
Ideally I would, but at this point its just not worth it for me and I would say most people. Maybe the tech will get there, and it probably will. Though for now custodial works just fine to buy VPN and coffee every once in a while
