What do you think about the idea of free relays introducing ads to sustain, and cover their costs

Seems inevitable. Hopefully only one of a number of sources of revenue.

That idea bothers me to be honest, I would rather pay for the service. Let’s say pay per use for example. I will pay x sats per note.

If we are saying that the Nostr model breaks up with traditional media, then showing me custom ads based on my nostr content is definitely not that !

Accurate

How about zapping relays?

Whatever brings value4value, but I don’t want ads 😂

Fak ads.

I’m with you, but I think most people still prefer “free”.

I would never put ads on relays. That being said. I have to cover over 1/2 of the nostr:npub16fcy8ynknssdv7s487nh4p2h4vr3aun64lpfea45d7h4sts9jheqevshgh costs to keep it free. This month we got to the 1/2 since I became like PBS and NPR with #Adopt-A-Relay

Would rather keep moving toward Relays-As-A-Service with nostr:npub1rhaxmxxgs5jkw4zesrptnwd5nrknh5lkaxnlzzegz9vphlgfdlqsjmej47 then everyone can pay and get a relay. 😉

This philosophy assumes that all the clients will be using the gossip model right ? That way I can communicate with my followers without the need of having the same relays, so user discovery won’t be a problem

Ideally. But either way we would give users the option of streaming to the Relayable relays from theirs and choice to broadcast notes. Streaming to replicate also makes it actually decentralized. Right now some of the most popular relays are single server islands.

Looking forward to see what nostr:npub1rhaxmxxgs5jkw4zesrptnwd5nrknh5lkaxnlzzegz9vphlgfdlqsjmej47 will have to offer 😍💜

Thanks. Just waiting on ARIN for blocks of IPs and to get beta version of strfry admin UI we're building. But soon! 🤙

Will this admin ui be available for independent operators for *cough* a donation?

We will open source it once it is not a mess. 🤣

I’m going to have to give strfry another look. I have a dedi sitting around not doing anything…

My perspective is that ad-supported relays are no longer “free”.

That said, if enough people are willing to pay for relays with attention rather than sats, then so be it. It will be a real shame if ads become the dominant funding mechanism, however, as it tends to be a centralizing force.

TheSameCat.io will always be ad free.

The ease with which relays can be set up, and the gossip model will likely make as supported relays impossible, as people would just move to relays that don’t.

How are you planning on monetizing ?

How would they enforce it? Or would they leave it up to clients to implement an ads NIP?

No idea on how it will be implemented

Someone has to pay for NOSTR but……Blech.
